How to become a Chartwork instructor

Another common question we get asked: "how can I become a Chartwork instructor?". Depending on who and what you want to teach, there are a number of options:

The SCC route

As with any other specialisation, courses are available within the SCC to qualify staff to instruct Chartwork. These are available both Nationally, and at London Area Staff Training (LAST) events - see the "Courses" page for further details of upcoming opportunities.

In London Area, the Chartwork structure is slightly different to other specialisations - there are only 2 levels:

Chartwork Instructor

Typically a 2-day course at a multi training event, this qualification will allow successful students to teach 3rd, 2nd and 1st Class, and assess 3rd and 2nd Class. Obviously in a 2 day course, some of the 2nd and 1st class tasks can't be fully covered, so on successful completion of the course, attendees are advised to obtain further training (whether RYA or SCC) before teaching the higher levels!

Chartwork Examiner

The ASO (Chartwork) will appoint experienced Chartwork Instructors (typically those with an RYA Yachtmaster qualification) as Chartwork Examiners, who can assess the 1st class courses.

The RYA way

RYA Dayskipper

Upon successful completion of an RYA Dayskipper (Shorebased) course, or for those who already hold this qualification, the ASO Chartwork would typically appoint the candidate as an SCC Chartwork Instructor.

RYA Yachtmaster

Upon successful completion of an RYA Yachtmaster (Shorebased) course, or for those who already hold this qualification, the ASO Chartwork would typically appoint the candidate as an SCC Chartwork Examiner.

RYA Shorebased Instructor / RYA Yachtmaster Instructor

People with these qualifications would typically be appointed as SCC Chartwork Examiners.

Instructors are required to notify the ASO Chartwork of any courses run. In order to keep the SCC instructor qualifications valid, holders must run at least 1 course (at any level) every 2 years, or attend refresher training.

For any further information on becoming a Chartwork instructor, contact the ASO Chartwork.
